Uchu Sentai Kyuranger – Episode 33 Review

Last week we skipped over the narrated intro and had a weirdly epic build-up to the opening title sequence. This week, we’re straight into the title sequence with no intro at all. Strange that they’re mixing it up but I supposed it’s to create something like a new start mid-series. The Naga is evil/going back in time arc spanned a lot of weeks so now that we’re back to something resembling status quo it seems the show is trying to give itself a push for the second half. Either thatRead More

Uchu Sentai Kyuranger – Episode 32 Review

We skip over the usual opening narration this week to go straight to Don Armage addressing his minions. It’s a strong opening that shows for the first time since the Kyurangers returned to the present that he really is still around and nothing has changed at all. The church setting is a striking choice for a such a short scene but it works really well and it makes me miss the more visually-interesting villain lairs in series like ToQger. The main purpose of this opening to get us onto theRead More

Uchu Sentai Kyuranger – Episode 31 Review

After going back to the past to change history, the Kyurangers returned to discover the world in a slightly more dystopian place than they left it, now that Garu and Kotaro have been captured, the Orion is badly damaged, and everything they just did seemed like it was for nothing. The start of this episode felt hopeless in a way that only this particular Sentai show can do. Part of Kyuranger‘s appeal to me is that it’s the story of the universe being freed from evil rather than a universeRead More

Uchu Sentai Kyuranger – Episode 30 Review

It’s strange to have something that feels like a final battle against the main villain in Episode 30 of a Sentai series, but here we are. We had an epic fight in a desert with cool drone shots and slo-mo, the main villain tried to attack the rangers’ base, and at least three characters were on the brink of death (and one actually died). It certainly felt endgame-y, and for me it’s exactly the sort of thing the mid-series of a Sentai show needs to keep the momentum going. IRead More

Uchu Sentai Kyuranger – Episode 29 Review

This episode got off to a strong start with the team in the present exploring the 300-year-old wreckage of the Orion. The destroyed control room was a simple but effective image that made for a memorable pre-title sequence with a genuine cliffhanger rather than just the promise of a fight. It’s nice to see Sentai attempting a more complicated storyline, and for the most part it works. As far as villain introductions go, it doesn’t get much better than Don Armage’s entrance at the end of this episode. There areRead More

Uchu Sentai Kyuranger – Episode 28 Review

Wow, they really want to make sure we understand the whole ‘two teams: one in the past, one in the present’ thing, huh? They’re even doing on-screen diagrams now. Something else I want to mention about the opening is that Lucky introduced the whole group as the Kyurangers rather than just saying his own name. Since the start of the series Lucky has steadily grown more and more competent as a leader and I can’t tell if it’s an intentional character arc or a side-effect of the show having gainedRead More

Uchu Sentai Kyuranger – Episode 27 Review

So there’s good news and there’s bad news. The bad news is that this new arc is kicking off immediately with a clip show. Why couldn’t we have the clip show last week and the Naga stuff this week? As it stands, the show built up momentum and then immediately threw it away, leading to a weirdly paced start to Naga’s ‘evil ranger’ arc. The good news is that this clip show is genuinely funny. A lot of that comes from the presence of Xiao Longbao, a character who (muchRead More

Uchu Sentai Kyuranger – Episode 26 Review

I’m so glad the show followed up on Naga’s lack of emotions being mentioned in 25. Since the character was first introduced I’ve been fascinated by the idea of a species that represses all emotions but so far it’s only been used for comic relief purposes. Seeing it return as a main plot thread feels like something we’ve been waiting on for a while and I can’t wait to see what the show does with it. Also, the opening scene of Naga looking bored in the cockpit followed by theRead More

Uchu Sentai Kyuranger – Episode 25 Review

This episode sort of went from having a cool premise to a weak premise to a cool premise again. It started out cool when we learned that time travel was being introduced to the show and that Tsurugi wanted to go to the planet Tocky to find out what happened before he was put into hibernation. It then got a bit weaker when they arrived on Tocky and realised that they specifically needed 12 people to make the time travel work, a highly convenient number that made the episode’s mainRead More

Uchu Sentai Kyuranger – Episode 24 Review

The main threat this episode, that the non-red, non-pink, and non-chef members of the Kyurangers were trapped inside a monster’s stomach having their blood slowly drained was pretty damn dark for Super Sentai. At least we had Balance there, once again forgetting the differences between robots and humans, to lighten the situation up a bit. In fact there was quite a lot of blood this week considering Tsurugi’s wounds were the main way to visualise his new mortality. If nothing else I suppose it raised the stakes and made itRead More

Uchu Sentai Kyuranger – Episode 23 Review

It was a pleasant surprise to have Eris back this episode considering most if not all of the good characters in this series are rangers. Even the mentor and characters who would normally be sidekicks or assistants, like Kotaro and Raptor, have their own suits, so it’s nice to have at least one helpful recurring character outside of the main circle. It was also just a good way to give everyone something to do, something that’ll become a lot harder now that we’ve reached a grand total of 12 rangers.Read More
