Uchu Sentai Kyuranger – Episode 24 Review

The main threat this episode, that the non-red, non-pink, and non-chef members of the Kyurangers were trapped inside a monster’s stomach having their blood slowly drained was pretty damn dark for Super Sentai. At least we had Balance there, once again forgetting the differences between robots and humans, to lighten the situation up a bit. In fact there was quite a lot of blood this week considering Tsurugi’s wounds were the main way to visualise his new mortality. If nothing else I suppose it raised the stakes and made itRead More

Uchu Sentai Kyuranger – Episode 23 Review

It was a pleasant surprise to have Eris back this episode considering most if not all of the good characters in this series are rangers. Even the mentor and characters who would normally be sidekicks or assistants, like Kotaro and Raptor, have their own suits, so it’s nice to have at least one helpful recurring character outside of the main circle. It was also just a good way to give everyone something to do, something that’ll become a lot harder now that we’ve reached a grand total of 12 rangers.Read More

Uchu Sentai Kyuranger – Episode 22 Review

Last episode was the debut of HououSoldier in battle but this episode was the real debut of the man inside the suit. We finally got to learn more about the character himself and, like most members of the Kyuranger cast, I could see him becoming a favourite of mine. His backstory about being the first person to travel beyond the moon 300 years ago not only gives us a rough idea of where abouts in history Kyuranger is supposed to take place but it gives him something unique to makeRead More

Uchu Sentai Kyuranger – Episode 21 Review

I love that this episode started with resolution rather than a pre-titles cliffhanger like normal. Starting with a problem to be solved works well to get the audience hooked but it’s nice to mix up the formula every now and then, and opening with the return of a character who apparently died is just as much of a hook. Because of the way Episode 21 starts, you could almost edit this together with 20 to create one seamless 45 minute story, and I can’t decide if that’s a good orRead More

Uchu Sentai Kyuranger – Episode 20 Review

The pre-title sequence for this episode did a good job of raising the stakes and reminding us how alien Stinger is. Now that he’s left the Kyurangers, using the antares technique was a nice bit of alien culture that the two brothers share that both added to the worldbuilding of the series and showed that Stinger is now fighting on his own terms with his own distinct style. The initial fight between the two of them was pretty strong although after injecting himself with his own venom I expected StingerRead More

Uchu Sentai Kyuranger – Episode 19 Review

This episode got off to a strong start by getting us immediately back on the search for the Argo. As much as I love that the Kyurangers don’t waste any time in getting stuff done, up to this point they’ve still been working to their own schedule. The universe has already been taken over and districts get liberated when they get around to liberating them. In Episode 19 this changes, as the pre-title establishes that the time limit to find the Argo is now being set by Jark Matter, notRead More

Uchu Sentai Kyuranger – Episode 18 Review

It was pretty obvious that this episode was thrown in at the last minute rather than being planned from the start. Episode 17 ended with the search for the Argo being about to continue, with the Kyutama recharged and the rangers eager to get back to it. Then, immediately as this episode starts, they’re chasing Madako through space to get the Kyutama back. It was a really jarring opening. Then again, I suppose it got the job done. On the one hand, I’d have liked an explanation as to howRead More

Uchu Sentai Kyuranger – Episode 17 Review

This episode didn’t do much in terms of the overall plot but it got away with it by using the excuse of the Kyutama needing to recharge and by opening with Garu’s frustration at not being able to progress. This isn’t a trick the show will be able to pull often before it becomes frustrating for the audience as well, but here it was an effective way of having a more relaxed episode while keeping the main plot of the series at the forefront. After how dramatic and heavy someRead More

Uchu Sentai Kyuranger – Episode 16 Review

Kyuranger is a properly good Sentai series. I mean, I know I’ve been giving it largely positive reviews already on an episode-by-episode basis but I just have to say, overall, this is a good Super Sentai show. And it’s good not just because it does the typical Super Sentai stuff well, but because it subverts expectations and actively tries to find new twists on things. Never was that more apparent than at the start of this episode, when Scorpio ends his fight with Stinger by defeating Madako and telling StingerRead More

Uchu Sentai Kyuranger – Episode 15 Review

After a brief trip to Jark Matter’s luxury Death Star last week, this episode sees the team leaving Earth properly to find one of the Argo’s Kyutama on an alien world. Rather than the usual solid blocks of filler we’re use to from Sentai shows, it’s very reassuring to be back on the main story after just a one-week diversion. I’m loving the pace of the show so far and how it manages to keep its focus in the right place instead of constantly going on tangents. Although the alienRead More
