Lupinranger VS Patoranger – Episodes 11 + 12 Review

These two episodes, while still being enjoyable to watch, feel like a bit of a step down for the show. The unique set-up of Lupinranger VS Patoranger has kept the series fresh and exciting up to now, but these episodes felt like they could have come from any Sentai show. Episode 12 in particular had an entirely predictable plot. As soon as we were introduced to a character who wanted to go fast and a macguffin that makes people go fast, the whole episode became boring. Every beat is hitRead More

Lupinranger VS Patoranger – Episodes 9 + 10 Review

As much as I like the Patorangers and their supporting cast, I can’t help but love the Lupinrangers more. Their stories are so much deeper, as is made clear by these two episodes. Not only do we meet Zamigo in these episodes, giving us a strong memorable Lupinranger-centric arch-nemesis, but the main focus of the two-parter is on what would happen if the Lupinrangers ever failed to get a collection piece. It’s refreshing to have a Super Sentai team who aren’t just trying to defeat the monsters, but are actuallyRead More

Lupinranger VS Patoranger – Episodes 7 + 8 Review

I’m so happy this two-parter happened. These two episodes raised the tedious issue of secret identities in Lupinranger VS Patoranger and dealt with it perfectly in an entertaining way before resting the issue so it doesn’t need to ever come up again. I find it really boring when all you’re doing in a show is watching characters find out information you already know, so I was a little frustrated when Pato Pink, out of nowhere with no foreshadowing at all, looked at the Lupinrangers at the end of Episode 7Read More

Lupinranger VS Patoranger – Episodes 5 + 6 Review

For me, this two-parter is the show really stretching its wings and showing how good the two team premise can allow it to be. Rather than focusing on one character per episode, these two are both ensemble pieces that show character development through the rangers’ interactions with each other both in and out of battle. One of the best things the series is doing so far is the way the two teams meet each other in civilian form without the police recognising the thieves. The police aren’t actively looking forRead More

Hasbro has announced that they have recently acquired the Saban’s Power Rangers and other various brands for $522 million.  Earlier this year, it was announced that Hasbro was to acquire the Power Rangers toy license in 2019, however under this new deal the company will have full rights to the franchise.  Whether this means they will be also acquiring the airing rights to the show is currently under wraps, although with this deal it is clear that the Power Rangers brand will be heading into a new era. Hasbro provided a press release on their official website.   LOSRead More

Lupinranger VS Patoranger – Episodes 3 + 4 Review

With the main premise of the show established, Episode 3 and 4 both do a good job of showing the potential this premise has. At first I was a little worried about how the interactions between the two teams were going to work, mainly due to the secret identity thing. Secret identities are rarely something Sentai bothers with in an meaningful way, but the first episodes of Lupin vs Pato set up the idea that the two teams will be meeting a lot in civilian form. For me, one ofRead More

Lupinranger VS Patoranger – Episode 2 Review

I’m relieved the slick choreography and camera work of the first episode continues into the second. Often, a new Sentai will make the first episode look fancy to give a good first impression without carrying any of the fanciness on through the rest of the show. Here, it seems the long takes and lateral camera movements used to show off the geography of fight scenes is going to be part of the show’s style rather than just a cool thing they did a few times to make the premiere memorable.Read More

Lupinranger VS Patoranger – Episode 1 Review

Wow. Really, wow. It’s easy to give good reviews to Super Sentai premiere episodes. After watching the same series for 50 weeks, just having brand new suits and characters and settings and toys to play with is all a premiere needs to feel fresh and exciting. Because of that, I tend to wave away a lot of issues with first episodes that would be a deal breaker in any other situation. For example, I go into Sentai first episodes expecting the pacing to be nonexistent due to the episode spendingRead More
