Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger – Episode 42 Review

There seems to be a running theme in Zyuohger of trying to make us care more about villains by physically attaching something we do care about to them in the hopes that the coolness with rub off somehow. With Kubar they made us care about him by giving him Bunglay’s hand and now with Blue Box McGee they’re trying to make us care about him by burying Cube Animals in him. I mean, that’s one way to do it I guess. It still doesn’t make Blue Box McGee any moreRead More

Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger – Episode 41 Review

Now THAT was more like it! Episode 41 is the first Zyuohger episode in a while that’s actually been about Zyuohger. Usually a Sentai adventure is a random scenario that the main team are dropped into and have to resolve, but here we actually had a story that not only advanced the plot of the series in major ways but also involved basically every major character and expanded on the mythology of the show. It was extremely satisfying to watch and what’s even better is that it ended on aRead More

Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger – Episode 40 Review

I have two things to say about that pre-title sequence. Firstly, it’s so cool to see a Super Sentai team running to the aid of a non-monster related threat. Saving that kid from the bullies is just a really nice heroic thing that doesn’t factor into any of the bigger picture stuff. Secondly, dear lord are we really going with this as a villain theme? What even was this episode? And how long is it until the next exciting plot thing happens? This was a Leo focus episode in theRead More

Uchuu Sentai Kyuuranger – First Impressions!

So! It’s that time of year again: the next Super Sentai series has been revealed, and I thought I’d take some time to go over my thoughts on what we have so far. My immediate first impressions are that I absolutely adore Uchuu Sentai Kyuuranger. I’m a big fan of sci-fi and I’m a big fan of large Sentai teams, so a space Sentai with nine members is basically a dream come true for me. The suits themselves look wonderful. They’re detailed without being too cluttered and overdesigned. All theRead More

Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger – Episode 39 Review

You know, I think I finally understand what the role of Master Ginis is in Zyuohger: he’s me. The Monsters of the Week attack the Earth as a way to create entertainment for Ginis/me and we both sit looking bored with our heads resting on our hands waiting for something interesting to happen. When Kubar says at the start “You’ll get to see something a bit different from the usual fare”, he’s actually talking directly to the audience, saying “Don’t worry! We don’t have any plot this episode but I swearRead More

Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger – Episode 38 Review

Well it only took 38 episodes but we’re finally getting into the history of Zyuland’s connection with Earth and what Bard’s motivations are. This show really should have had a much deeper storyline, particularly one that actually gave the main villains something to do, so the whole thing didn’t feel so thinly spread. We’ve had so many pointless gimmick episodes with no plot progression and then all the plot progression happens at once. Still, what we finally got was wonderful. Humans finding their way into Zyuland and then being killedRead More

Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger – Episode 37 Review

I kinda love the way this episode starts with a dramatic shot of Bard purely to say “Hey everyone: remember Bard still exists”, immediately followed by a scene that was like “Hey everyone: Larri still exists”. There’s such a massive shift between filler episodes and plot episodes that you can tell immediately which of the two sorts you’re watching. I guess if you’re marathoning the series, it helps you know which episodes are skippable. Both of these scenes are then followed by the villains discussing this week’s blood game, soRead More

Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger – Episode 36 Review

Oh hey, remember when the Bird Man dug up a cube animal like ten episodes ago and how that hasn’t been mentioned since? Actually, remember the Bird Man in general? Apparently this show could only muster about six interesting episodes about him so they chose to spread the episodes out across the entire length of the show. Yet another pacing-related issue that you’d think the writers would have figured out by now given that they’ve been producing 50-episode shows for decades. One episode later and I already miss Bunglay (andRead More

Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger – Episode 35 Review

It’s getting kinda ridiculous that Mario still doesn’t know about the Zyuohgers being the Zyuohgers. I feel like he should have been told by now, or figured it out in the episode where Yamato saved him from the Dethgaliens. Either way, the scenes at the start of every episode where Mario shows up in a good mood, completely unaware of all the terrible stuff going on behind the scenes, are starting to feel very predictable. Other than that, this episode had a strong opening with Bunglay taking Yamato’s changer andRead More

Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger – Episode 34 Review

This episode got off to a great start with a three-on-three mecha fight using monsters pulled from an unknown’s memory. It was an elegant way to dive into the action straight away while setting up a mystery and also reminding us of Bunglay’s mission to capture Cube Whale. Similar to the way in which Zyuohger makes its heroes more interesting by making them more proactive in trying to achieve their goals, here we see Bunglay also trying to achieve his. Instead of just sitting back and throwing more Monsters ofRead More

Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger – Episode 33 Review

A sumo themed monster is introduced less than a minute before Leo and Amu learn about sumo wrestling for the first time. Gee, I wonder where this is going. Immediately after an example of how to do Super Sentai filler episodes well, we get an example of how to do them badly. This episode was not very good. In fact it felt like I was watching one of those Sentai stories they show you a brief glimpse off at the start of an episode as part of a some previous off-screenRead More

Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger – Episode 32 Review

I love it when the bad guys impatiently ask Ginis to get the Blood Game started again. Even they are bored with him. This episode kicked off by establishing a fun premise (involving one of the most unusual and memorable monster designs we’ve had in a while) which, like a lot of Zyuohger‘s filler episodes, had a lot of potential to further develop character relationships. I loved Leo’s line when the Zyuohgers first showed up and had the premise explained to them: “Feels like it’s been a while since we’ve done somethingRead More

Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger – Episode 31 Review

And so ends the search for Cube Whale. This has been a really strong run of episodes for Zyuohger, from celebrating 40 years of Super Sentai to expanding the mythology of Zyuland to getting some fun new whale-themed gear (which incidentally, is the best theme). In many ways, these episodes are exactly what I want to see Super Sentai doing more of. By spreading out a single power-up over multiple episodes, like one episode for the new form debut, one episode for the first appearance of Cube Whale, and oneRead More

Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger – Episode 30 Review

Despite the Gokaigers having left at the end of the previous episode, this is essentially the third part of a four-parter as the search for Cube Whale continues. This episode immediately grabbed my attention with the longer-than-usual pre-title sequence which set up the mystery brilliantly. Going from the Zyuohgers attempting to find Cube Whale to hearing about it in the newspaper to Bunglay hearing the same thing was a really smooth transition, and Bunglay reading the memories of the TV news crew he’d just killed was a fantastic use ofRead More

Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger – Episode 29 Review

Part two kicked off with some pretty intense one-on-one battles between the Zyuohgers and Gokaigers. This opening was full of fun little moments, like Misao being upset that he had nobody to fight, or Aka Ranger fighting Zyuoh Eagle. Speaking of which, I’ve never seen Sentai do suit damage before, but Zyuoh Eagle looked pretty wrecked by the end. My favourite moment though had to be when Captain Marvelous raised his gun, paused, then fired. Any other Sentai red would have launched into some big speech before pulling the triggerRead More
