Uchu Sentai Kyuranger – Episode 11 Review

Just because this show has given us 11 rangers in 10 episodes, that doesn’t mean it has any plans of slowing down apparently. At the start of this episode we’re immediately introduced to the team’s new objective: finding the Argo, a legendary ship that takes three Kyutama to summon. I’ve come to really love the bits at the start of every episode where the team is on the ship figuring out what their next mission is going to be. It adds to the notion that the Kyurangers are an organisationRead More

Uchu Sentai Kyuranger – Episode 10 Review

Just when I start to forget how much this show is like Star Wars, blue ghosts and a character called Mothma show up… I was slightly worried that a child ranger would be cringe-worthy to watch every week but, amazingly, it turned out better that I could have imagined. Not only is the kid who plays Kotaro quite a capable young actor, but it’s been a while since I’ve seen a child character in anything treated with this sort of respect. It makes sense to have child characters in children’sRead More

Uchu Sentai Kyuranger – Episode 9 Review

Episode 9 marks the first proper appearance of Xiao Longbao’s ranger form after a brief look at the prototype form last week. This episode is a lot neater and more straight-forward than Episode 8, mainly due to the fewer plot threads. Rather than dedicating time to Naga, Champ, and Balance’s quest to find the Kyutama, here they’ve already found it and are just on their way back home. The main task at the start of the episode, rescue Spada, is also a lot more straight-forward and personal a goal thanRead More

Uchu Sentai Kyuranger – Episode 8 Review

Ever since the very first episode aired, I’ve been a fan of Kyuranger. I liked the sci-fi theme, I liked all the designs, and I liked the idea of having a larger team. That being said, I was always sort of waiting for this show to stop being so good. Based on my past experience of Sentai, there’s always a moment where the show drops in quality to a basic resting state where nothing is really accomplished week-to-week until it all picks up again for the endgame. In addition, theRead More

Uchu Sentai Kyuranger – Episode 7 Review

So I guess having Kamen Rider crossovers super early in the run of a Sentai series is just a tradition now? Sure, why not. Gives the episode something to remember I guess. The set-up for this adventure, that there’s a monster going around stealing people’s birthdays, is definitely the wackiest plot Kyuranger has done so far but this is a show that can handle wackiness fairly well. After all, the crazy coincidences that get Lucky out of trouble every week add an element of ridiculousness to the whole thing anyway.Read More

Uchu Sentai Kyuranger – Episode 6 Review

Here comes the moment of truth: does a Super Sentai show work with a full ensemble of nine regular characters? Was all that hype worth it? For me, so far, so good. This episode immediately got on my good side by acknowledging that Hammy is an infinitely more qualified leader than Lucky is and that Lucky is an idiot. There’s an attempt made towards the end to justify Lucky’s luck and how his positive thinking allows him to achieve his goals, which reminded me a lot of Doctor Who whereRead More

Uchu Sentai Kyuranger – Episode 5 Review

Despite suffering from some clunky character development, Kyuranger Episode V: The Jark Matter Strikes Back was by far the most fun episode of the series to date. I don’t know if it’s necessarily the best episode to date (for me that’s Episode IV) but finally seeing the core nine rangers unite to fight back against the Jark Matter while giving A New Hope to the oppressed on-lookers was incredibly satisfying and just fun. And if there’s one thing I watch Super Sentai for, it’s fun. The clunky character development stuffRead More

Uchu Sentai Kyuranger – Episode 4 Review

Immediately this episode got off to a good start by replacing Lucky’s opening narration with an opening narration from Raptor-283, this week’s main character. It was so relieving to have a story that focused on someone else for a change rather than continually having to learn about new characters through the eyes of such an obnoxious Red. This episode overall felt a lot more leisurely and well-paced than the previous three, and part of that is down to the more economical use of the main ensemble. Instead of introducing anyRead More

Uchu Sentai Kyuranger – Episode 3 Review

This episode excites me the most out of the three we’ve had so far. Making the first episode of a Super Sentai show enjoyable is pretty easy to do because you’re going to be introducing us to new characters and new suits and new situations that will naturally seem more fresh and interesting because we’ve just finished sitting through around 50 episodes of the previous characters and suits and situations. What’s really difficult is maintaining the same level of interest through the following 49 episodes, and it’s here that I’ve hadRead More

Uchu Sentai Kyuranger – Episode 2 Review

Both the good stuff and the bad stuff from the first episode continue into Kyuranger‘s second episode. The good stuff includes inventive planets, some excellent universe-building, amazing mecha fights with top-notch practical effects, and characters who’s backstories are bursting with potential for expansion. The bad stuff basically boils down to Lucky. Once all nine members of the team are active in the show, things are going to get very crowded, so the show needs to put some effort into spreading the focus to different members of the ensemble. The problemRead More

Uchu Sentai Kyuranger – Episode 1 Review

So! Kyuranger. I loved it. It was a strong first episode that did exactly what first episodes need to do: sell the audience on the amount of potential that can be squeezed out of a premise. I can already tell from just the first week alone that we’re in for a wild ride. The sheer variety of alien planets alone makes this a very unique Sentai that I’m sure won’t get boring any time soon. On that note, I’m so happy with how well this episode was paced. I loveRead More

Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger – Episode 48 (Finale) Review

Oh, you are KIDDING me! Naria is still alive?! Why? What are the writers going to do with her-Oh. Oh, I guess she’s dead again. Huh. Never mind. Overall, Zyuohger has been a pretty average Super Sentai series for me. The suit designs were cool, I loved the main cast, and the ‘optimism versus cynicism’ thing that Yamato and Bunglay had is still my favourite hero/villain dynamic in Sentai, perfectly summing up why I love to watch tokusatsu. That being said, it was still kinda meh, and this impression hasn’tRead More

Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger – Episode 47 Review

So apparently there’s one more episode after this that I didn’t know about. That being said, why on Earth wasn’t this the finale? Just like with last week, this was an episode that was okay to watch in isolation but absolutely failed to build any sort of momentum for the series overall. When Master Ginis walked out of the explosion at the end all I could think was “Oh, come on!” Killing Green Toxica (FINALLY!) and bringing the spaceship crashing down to Earth (in some conveniently uninhabited mountains rather thanRead More

Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger – Episode 46 Review

On the whole, I’ve enjoyed watching Zyuohger. It hasn’t been perfect by any stretch of the imagination but it hasn’t been bad either. The biggest crime of Zyuohger‘s storytelling is just that it didn’t have enough to hook me for 47 episodes, and never was that more apparent than in this, the penultimate episode. The episode ends with Azald, a threatening villain who is actually significant to the show’s mythology, being killed by the rangers. Then, Master Ginis, the most boring villain in the show, decides to stick around andRead More

Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger – Episode 45 Review

Buckle up everyone: it’s endgame time. This episode kicked off the final arc of the series just about as well as it could. We had some strong character stuff examining Yamato’s family situation, some world-building stuff with the origin of Misao’s powers and Azald’s backstory, and some strong action stuff, including the first time all seven Zyuohgers have fought together. It’s interesting that this henshin had Yamato going into Zyuoh Gorilla mode rather than his default Zyuoh Eagle form, but I guess that’s so we can have a ‘proper’ allRead More
